Adaptive Outdoor Adventure Film Evening

We would like to run film evenings as fundraisers, hosted or co-hosted by you. This could be a really fun way to engage with your communities and raise funds for future grant recipients. A big part of our kaupapa is about helping challenge and change notions of what’s possible with a neurological condition or disability, and an event like this achieves that in a powerful way. The goal will be to show great films that will leave every feeling inspired and uplifted.
Here are the details:
You host a film evening at a local cinema or suitable location as a fundraiser, with people paying a donation to attend.
Show a selection of films (from the list below) and, if you want, briefly talk about your journey with Mastering Mountains.
You make contact with a local theatre or hall and get a quote. Let me know the date you’d like, and I can take it from there.
I will set up the ticketing systems.
I will source prizes for a raffle to run during the event as an additional fundraiser. I recommend you also source additional raffle prizes from local businesses (e.g., cafe gift vouchers, etc.).
I have received permission to show all but one of the films below. Please read through the list of films, and if there are any other films about people with disabilities in the outdoors that you’d like to show, please let me know, and I will seek permission to show them.
Film Selection
Overcoming MS to Climb Mountains (6 mins)
About Katy’s Glenie’s climbing journey with Mastering Mountains. It’s a really lovely piece and is (in my opinion!) pretty inspiring. It’s a great intro to Mastering Mountains, MS and the outdoors in NZ.

This Way is Up (24 mins)
About a Scottish mountain biker who has MS. It’s a good story and covers the impacts of MS really well. The story talks very positively about the benefits of lifestyle modifications, but — and this is perhaps my only caveat — it does present an anti-pharmaceutical/DMT perspective. But with the right introduction, I don’t think that will be an issue. It is nicely shot and a good film.
Soundscape (14 mins)
This is an incredible film about a blind climber. It’s amongst the best outdoor films I’ve ever seen, and explains how Erik uses sound and touch to visualise the landscape and his environment.

Rise (4 mins)
This is an outstanding short film about a rock climber with FND. It is magnificently shot and powerfully moving, talking about the how climbing and the landscape impact her sense of self.

A Dose of Nature (10 mins)
A really beautiful film about a person’s rehabilitation journey, and the place nature and the outdoors in that healing process.

Tread Setters (35 mins)
This is a great film about a group of cyclists embarking on a really challenging cycling mission. The group has mixed abilities and disabilities, and it’s an incredible example of the power of community. The narrative is good.

ASCEND (11 mins) - awaiting permission
A really cool film about an amputee who completes a big skiing mission in the USA. He has a great message around the need to reframe disability and the way we talk about it.

Films for future events:
The Accessible Outdoors (15 mins)
This is about the importance of making the outdoors accessible and focuses on people with general disabilities. I may have to do a bit of digging, however, to find how to watch it.
Climbing Blind (70 mins)
A film about a blind British climber.

Grey Ghost (27 mins)
This is about my climbing trip to Stewart Island, where I talk about my diagnosis and what getting outdoors means to me. It has a tiny bit at the end about Mastering Mountains.
