Our mindsets can shape our experience: holding us back or strengthening us to continue in the face of our challenges. In the context of a neurological condition, it’s easy for our minds to focus on our limitations, even though we can probably achieve more than we expect. This is why it’s helpful to explore the science of mindsets.
However, mindset might be one of the most misunderstood concepts in modern psychology. So much has been said and written about it that it's hard to know what's true and what's not.
In this presentation, Dr Dwain Allan, an expert on mindset science, will pull back the curtain on mindsets. Specifically, he will discuss how our minds interpret reality rather than perceive it, and how mindsets affect our attention, expectations, and even our physiology. Drawing on his own lab's research and that of others, Dr Allan will explain why many of the limits we experience are often much less objective than we think. If you're interested in mental performance, behaviour change, or human possibility, this presentation will be one you won't want to miss.
What you will learn:
During this engaging seminar, you will learn about:
What a mindset actually is and what it is not, where mindsets come from, and how they work.
The step-by-step scientific method for mindset change.
The three mindsets most relevant to the Mastering Mountains community and how to utilise them to create sustained momentum and accomplishment.
A powerful exercise to supercharge a growth mindset for lifelong learning, resilience, and self-improvement.
And a lot more!
This session will be packed with research and surprising insights. But it won't be boring. The goal is to make the science of mindsets accessible, actionable, and immediately useful to you. Expect to leave with simple, practical tools to help you utilise mindset to enhance your experience of life.
Your presenter:
Dr Dwain Allan
Dr Dwain Allan is a psychological scientist, a Lecturer in Psychology, and the founding director of Taiwhanga Whakahaere Hinengaro – The Mind Control Lab at the University of Canterbury. He is a leading expert in the area of success psychology. At the broadest level, his pioneering work focuses on understanding, changing, directing, and harnessing the power of the human mind to unlock greater potential and achieve success in a world of accelerated flux.
His lab is especially interested in the subjective aspects of the mind (e.g., beliefs and mindsets) and, more particularly, the profound but hidden influence they exert on objective reality. Together with his students, he has recently found preliminary evidence for the existence of two distinct mindsets. He has also developed psychologically precise mindset interventions. As well, Dr Allan teaches popular post-graduate psychology courses, including PSYC488: Mindsets & Mindshifts – The Psychology of Achievement, and his research has been published in top-tier academic journals, featured in the media, and presented at international peer-reviewed conferences.
Additionally, Dr Allan has been referred to as the "expert's expert" due to the fact that he is highly sought after by top professional speakers, executives, coaches, thought leaders, best-selling authors, scholars, and other experts who wish to advance their understanding of the mind and apply his work to achieve greater things.
