Strategies for talking about your health and support needs with family, friends, and colleagues.

Details: Communicating about your health and needs

Communication with loved ones and colleagues can be challenging at the best of times, but especially when a chronic illness is involved. In fact, it’s often exceptionally difficult to discuss with family, friends, and colleagues about the symptoms we’re experiencing, the support we need, and any boundaries we might need to establish. Even when these people want to help and can see something’s wrong, we can fear that our honesty will make us seem like a burden, or that we might be misunderstood or dismissed.

In this session, we will explore strategies that will help us communicate more effectively with family, friends, and colleagues about our health and the support we need.

If it’s helpful to you, please feel free to bring your partner or family member along too.

What you will learn

During this Zoom session, you will learn:

  • The importance and benefits of communicating with family and friends.

  • How to disclose health challenges to loved ones when the other person could experience strong emotions (eg, disclosing diagnosis or new symptoms for the first time).

  • How to safely communicate with people who might not understand, and what to do if they don’t.

  • How to communicate and set healthy boundaries.

Your presenter: Robyn Salisbury

Robyn is a retired clinical psychologist who used to specialise in couples and sex therapy. One of her books,  Staying in Love, sums up key issues in the ongoing work of growing a relationship. She loves swimming and walking to keep fit and enjoy nature. Much of her walking is with husband Kevin who she's found talks better when they're moving!  Reading, writing and food production also take their place in Robyn's life, alongside precious times with her two grandsons and with friends.

Robyn was diagnosed with progressive autoimmune based Autonomic Neuropathy 15 years ago, allowing her to have some personal insights into the impact of MS and FND on life, including on a relationship.
